Herstmonceux Castle Moat

The moat at Herstmonceux Castle is one of those water features that stops you in your tracks the moment you round the corner. This isn't some ornamental pond - it's a proper medieval defence system, wide and dark and genuinely impressive, wrapping around a 15th-century brick castle that looks almost impossibly perfect reflected in the water.

You can walk the full circuit if you've got the legs for it, and the path gives you different angles on the castle with each step. It's quieter than you'd expect, especially outside summer weekends. The water itself is still enough that you'll spot fish, and in winter the bare trees frame the castle like something from a gothic novel.

This works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks around Normans Bay or Pevensey - it's only a few miles inland. Families with younger children will manage the walk fine, though there's not much to actually do once you've seen the moat, so give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who sits and sketches. History buffs will appreciate the engineering, but be aware the castle grounds themselves aren't always open to the public, so check before you visit.

It's free to explore the exterior, and it makes a solid half-day excursion if you're combining it with a coastal trip to Pevensey. The setting is genuinely atmospheric without feeling touristy.
