Herstmonceux Place

The red-brick castle rising up near Pevensey stops you dead. Herstmonceux Place isn't medieval - it's a 15th-century fortified mansion that looks far grander than most people expect when they first spot it across the fields. The castle itself is genuinely impressive: proper tall towers, crenellations, a moat that still holds water. You can walk the grounds and get close enough to photograph it properly, which is what most visitors do.

It's owned by Queen's University and used for academic programmes, so public access is limited - you won't be wandering through the interiors on a whim. But the exterior is what matters here anyway. History buffs will appreciate that this is where the Dacre family held power centuries ago, and the architecture tells that story without needing a guided tour.

Allow an hour if you're stopping by, maybe more if you want to walk the perimeter properly. It's free to view from outside, which makes it a decent detour between Pevensey and the quieter parts of Sussex. The setting is rural enough that it feels removed from everything, even though you're only minutes from towns.

If you're based at Fontmills Farm or Beech Estate - both excellent campsites nearby - this works as a morning stop before heading toward the coast or inland attractions. Don't expect to spend half a day here, but it's exactly the sort of place that makes a camping holiday memorable: a bit of actual history without the crowds.
