Hicks' Plantation

Hicks' Plantation is a proper working forest just outside Braintree where you can actually walk through managed woodland without the theme park fuss. It's the sort of place where you notice things - the different tree ages, how the light filters through depending on what's been planted where, the quiet that comes from genuine forestry rather than manicured parkland.

If you're into walking, this delivers. The woodland paths are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though it's not a push-button attraction with visitor centres and signage at every turn. You're essentially wandering through an active timber operation, which means it feels lived-in rather than preserved behind velvet ropes. Bring proper footwear after rain - it gets boggy in patches.

Historically minded visitors might appreciate seeing how commercial forestry actually works, rather than the sanitised nature reserve experience. It's educational without trying to be. Kids who've outgrown playground antics but aren't yet interested in three-hour hikes will find it engaging for a good hour or two.

Staying at Hill Farm campsite nearby (just over 4 miles away and frankly excellent value) makes this a natural addition to a woodland-focused break in Essex. It's not the sort of destination you'd plan a day around alone, but combined with other local walking or a nearby nature reserve, it rounds out a proper outdoor holiday. The forest is free to access and worth the detour if you're in the area.
