High Banks

You won't find much signage when you arrive at High Banks, just a low earthwork rising from the landscape a couple of miles outside Kirkcudbright. This is a Neolithic causewayed enclosure - one of Scotland's oldest monuments, dating back roughly 5,500 years. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of digging into what you're actually looking at rather than expecting crowds or visitor facilities.

The site itself is modest. A series of banks and ditches form an incomplete circuit, which is exactly what archaeologists look for when they're trying to understand how Neolithic communities organised themselves. You can walk the perimeter in under twenty minutes, though spending longer helps you work out the layout. It's peaceful rather than dramatic, and that's rather the point - this was never meant to impress visually. It was functional: a gathering place, a defended settlement, somewhere cattle were penned.

This is absolutely one for the archaeology types and serious walkers who want substance over spectacle. If you've got young kids who need interpretation boards and a gift shop, you'll find this a bit thin. Free to visit - there are no barriers or fees - though you'll want to check access locally before you go.

Parked at Silver Craigs or Seaward Holiday Park? High Banks works as a quiet detour on a longer walk through this corner of Dumfries and Galloway, not a destination in itself. The real value comes if you're already exploring the Neolithic archaeology of the region. Otherwise it's perhaps better saved for a second visit when you've got more time to sit with the history.
