It's the kind of place that suits patient walkers and anyone with binoculars more than it does people after a quick half-hour stroll. Bird enthusiasts will want to spend a good couple of hours here - the light's best early morning or late afternoon. Families with older kids who can manage a moderate walk will enjoy it, though there's nothing flashy to keep the under-eights entertained.

Access is free and it's a decent walk from Ripon town centre if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Sleningford Watermill is barely a mile and a half away, or Riverside Meadows only slightly further. The reserve links nicely with a broader walking holiday around Ripon's countryside. Go in spring or early summer when the birds are active and the reeds haven't grown too tall to wade through.
