Thornborough Henges

Three massive earthen banks rise from the Yorkshire countryside near Ripon, each one stretching across the landscape like the ghost of something ancient and deliberate. Thornborough Henges aren't the dramatic stone circles you might expect - they're Neolithic monuments, roughly 3,500 years old, made from nothing but packed earth and the sheer labour of people who thought these things mattered enough to shift tons of soil by hand.

What you actually see is three separate henges arranged in a near-perfect line, each one a raised circular bank with a ditch running along its inner edge. The scale is what gets you - they're massive, properly impressive even as earthworks. Walking around them takes the better part of an hour if you want to do it properly, taking in the full shape of each one. There's a sense of mystery to it, partly because the purpose remains unclear. Ritual site? Gathering place? The ground keeps its secrets.

This is one for archaeology buffs and anyone who genuinely gets excited about Neolithic culture. Kids might find it bit underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's no interpretation centre, no facilities, just you and some very old bumps in the ground. Access is free and unrestricted, which is brilliant. The site sits between several holiday parks including Woodland Lakes Lodges and Riverside Meadows, making it a decent half-morning excursion if you're staying in the area around Ripon. Go midweek if possible - you'll likely have the place to yourself, which somehow makes these ancient earthworks feel even more atmospheric.
