High Fen Wildland

The flattest, wettest corner of Norfolk you'll find anywhere - High Fen Wildland is a proper working wetland reserve that feels genuinely remote despite being just a couple of miles from King's Lynn. There's no visitor centre or café, no manicured paths with interpretation boards. What you get instead are raised boardwalks cutting through reed beds and wet woodland, with the kind of birdwatching potential that makes ornithologists lose their minds. We spotted marsh harriers, bitterns, and more warblers than I could name. The landscape is deceptively vast. Walk out onto those boards and the horizon disappears into water and vegetation - it's the kind of place where you forget you're in Norfolk, let alone 15 minutes from a market town. Allow a good two hours if you're genuinely interested in wildlife; less if you're just passing through. Spring and early summer are your best bets for birds and wildflowers. Free to access, though donations keep it running. If you're staying at Grange Farm Touring Park or Oak Lodge Glamping nearby, this makes a solid half-day excursion that's genuinely different from the usual Norfolk attractions. Not for everyone - there's no real interpretation, and the weather can turn vicious across open water. But if you like birds, wetlands, and a bit of wilderness without the crowds, High Fen delivers exactly that.
