High Pennard

Wind whips across the clifftop here with proper force, but the views across Three Cliffs Bay make every buffeting gust worthwhile. High Pennard sits on limestone cliffs above one of Gower's most photographed beaches, giving you a bird's eye perspective of the three limestone stacks that give the bay its name. On clear days, you can see right across to Devon's coast.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot. The approach involves a decent yomp across grassy clifftop from the car park near Southgate, but it's not technically challenging - just be prepared for the coastal wind. Families with older kids who don't mind a trek will love it, though toddlers might find the walk a bit much.

Allow a good hour if you're just coming for the views, longer if you fancy exploring the medieval castle ruins that crown the headland. The remains of Pennard Castle add a bit of historical interest to what's essentially a spectacular natural viewpoint. Free to access, naturally, and worth timing for late afternoon when the light catches the limestone cliffs just right.
