High Wood

The woodland around High Wood, just east of St. Neots, is proper walking territory. Ancient trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually feel like you've stepped away from things without needing a full day's expedition.

It's a mixed woodland - broadleaf mostly - and the sort of place that rewards you for turning up at the right time of year. Spring brings bluebells in earnest, autumn gives you that golden light filtering through the canopy, and winter shows you the actual shape of the place without all the leaf cover getting in the way. The paths are well-trodden but not rammed with people, which makes a change around here.

Walkers will find it genuinely worth a visit. Bring decent boots if there's been rain - it can get boggy in patches - and allow a couple of hours minimum to do it justice. Families with kids who can handle uneven ground will be fine; younger children might find it a bit samey after half an hour. History buffs should know this is old woodland, the sort that's been here for centuries, though there's not much in the way of interpretation on the ground.

If you're staying at St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site or the Grafham Water setup nearby, High Wood makes a solid morning out. It's close enough not to eat into your day, but proper enough to feel like an actual walk rather than a stroll around a car park. Not life-changing, but a good reason to lace up your boots.
