Higher Field Plantation

A proper Somerset woodland, Higher Field Plantation sits just outside Yeovil and delivers exactly what you'd want from a forest walk without any pretence. The plantation is predominantly conifers - Douglas fir and spruce mostly - which means even on drizzly days the canopy does its job and keeps you relatively dry. Paths wind through in a fairly straightforward manner, though they can get muddy after rain, so decent boots aren't optional.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. It's the kind of place where you can tick off a solid two-hour loop without feeling rushed, and the tree cover means summer visits remain pleasant when everywhere else is baking. There's something about conifer forests that just works for clearing your head - no crowds, minimal faffing about. You won't find dramatic vistas or hidden waterfalls; this is genuine working forest, not some prettified tourist attraction.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit dull after the first mile. There's no visitor centre, no play areas, no cafe. Just trees. Older children who'll actually walk the full route will get more from it. Cyclists would probably enjoy it too if the paths allow - though muddy sections in winter rule that out.

If you're staying at Long Hazel Park nearby, this makes a solid morning out before heading back for lunch. It's free to access, no gated entrance nonsense, and you can park reasonably close to the main paths. Go midweek if possible; weekends bring the usual suspects.
