Higher Lumb Gill Wood

The woodland walk through Higher Lumb Gill takes you into proper limestone country, following a beck that cuts through ancient trees and exposed rock faces. It's the sort of place where you genuinely forget you're in Lancashire - the canopy closes in, the light goes soft, and for a bit you could be miles from anywhere.

The gill itself is the main draw. Water tumbles over small cascades, the banks are thick with ferns and moss, and if you time it right after rain, you'll see it properly flowing. In summer it's a cool refuge from the heat. Winter can be muddy underfoot - that's not a complaint, just fact. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how far they venture up the wood.

This suits walkers more than young children, though determined kids who enjoy scrambling will get something from it. The paths are uneven and steep in places, not exactly push-chair friendly. If you're staying at Calder Farm just over 6 miles away, it's an easy detour before heading into Settle itself.

Free to access, naturally. Go early if the weather's been wet because the paths get slippery and boot-sucking. Spring is probably the best time - the new growth is striking against the limestone, and the water levels are decent without being treacherous.
