Higher Round Wood

Walk into Higher Round Wood and you're straight into proper Lancashire woodland - ancient oak and beech that's been here longer than any of us will be. It's the sort of place where you notice things: the light filtering through in columns, the carpet of last year's leaves still soft underfoot, birdsong that actually makes you stop and listen rather than scroll.

The wood sits just outside Preston, making it an ideal break from town-centre wandering. Paths wind through at a gentle pace - nothing demanding, which is exactly why families with younger legs tend to get on well here. You're looking at a leisurely hour or two depending on how deep you want to go, and whether you're the type to stop and photograph moss on tree bark. There are spots where you can actually sit without feeling watched, which counts for something in the North West.

If you're camping at Gibsons Barn Caravan Park down the road, this is the sort of morning walk that properly sets up your day - close enough to not feel like a mission, far enough in that you've actually left civilisation behind. The woodland floor shifts throughout the year, so spring brings that fresh green rush, while autumn turns the whole thing into something genuinely atmospheric.

No admission charge as far as I can tell, and no barriers either - just turn up with decent shoes. It won't blow your mind, but it's honest woodland that delivers what it promises.
