Walk into Highfield Clump on the outskirts of Braintree and you're immediately swallowed by proper Essex woodland - the kind of place that feels miles away from anywhere but actually sits just outside town. It's a modest forest, nothing grandiose, but there's something quietly satisfying about it. The trees crowd in, the ground underfoot is soft with leaf litter, and if you're lucky you'll spot woodland birds flitting through the canopy.

This is walker territory, really. You're looking at a straightforward woodland ramble rather than anything demanding - perfect for blowing out the cobwebs on a weekend morning or stretching the legs between camp activities. The paths are manageable, though they can get boggy after rain, so decent boots help. Allow an hour for a proper wander without rushing, maybe 45 minutes if you're just after the lay of the land.

Families with older kids will get on fine here - younger ones might lose interest once they've kicked through a few leaves. It's free, naturally, and there's no hidden visitor centre or café to contend with, so go with proper expectations.
