Hill of Urchany, dun site

The Hill of Urchany isn't much to look at from the road - just a grass-covered mound rising out of the Aberdeenshire landscape - but what you're standing on is a proper Iron Age dun, the kind of fortified settlement that would have housed a chieftain and his clan maybe two thousand years ago. There's not a lot left in terms of visible stonework, which is honest enough: the ramparts have softened into the hillside, grass has claimed what once was defensive ditching.

Worth the drive from Nairn? If you're already exploring the archaeological side of the Highlands, yes. You get a genuine sense of how these settlements would have commanded their territory - the views across the surrounding land are decent, and the site feels genuinely quiet and off the tourist trail. It's the sort of place where you can actually think about what life looked like here rather than shuffling around behind a roped-off barrier.

For walkers and history enthusiasts, it works as a quick stop - thirty minutes at most, longer if you're the type to sit and sketch what the place might have looked like. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on Iron Age forts; it's not interactive or particularly dramatic.

Access is free and unrestricted, though the terrain can be boggy depending on the season. The nearest proper base is Nairn, with Barrow Campsite offering straightforward caravan facilities just 2.9 miles away, or ACE Adventures if you want something with more activities on site. Both put you within easy reach of this and several other Aberdeenshire archaeological sites worth your time.
