Hill steps

The walk up Hill Steps rewards you with proper coastal views across the Padstow area - nothing fancy, just solid Cornish scenery that justifies the leg work. It's a nature reserve that takes you through scrubby vegetation and bracken, with the path itself well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though it can be muddy after rain.

You're looking at maybe forty minutes to an hour there and back, depending on fitness. The actual summit isn't dramatic - more of a grassy bump with views rather than a dramatic peak - but that's the charm of it. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit relentless uphill. Serious walkers pass through without breaking stride. History enthusiasts won't find much to get excited about, though the reserve itself has botanical interest if you know what you're looking at.

It's free to walk, no gates or charges, and you can turn up whenever suits. Avoid the height of summer heat if you can - the exposed sections get proper scorching. Spring brings wildflowers; winter can be bleak and windy.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Dennis Cove Campsite is literally round the corner - this slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading into Padstow proper for lunch. Porthilly Beach Holiday Park and Padstow Holiday Village are also close enough that it's a ten-minute drive, making it a good leg-stretcher rather than a full-day commitment. Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities - bring water and wear proper shoes.
