Hillfields Coppice

The coppice sits just outside Bewdley and offers proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at bigger forest sites. It's a working coppice with paths threading through dense trees, and there's genuine history here - this is ancient woodland managed using traditional methods, which means you're walking through habitat that's been actively maintained for centuries.

The appeal depends entirely on what you want from a wood. If you're after dramatic vistas or marked trails with benches every hundred yards, you'll be disappointed. But if you actually enjoy the texture of a working forest - the smell of freshly cut timber, the density of the vegetation, the sense that you're somewhere real and not manicured for visitors - you'll get on with it. Walkers find it worthwhile, particularly those with decent boots and an hour to kill. Kids either love the freedom of rambling through undergrowth or get bored quickly; depends on the child.

The practical bit: access is free as far as I can tell, though it pays to check locally. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent walk. Spring's excellent when the bluebells come through, though honestly any mild day works.

It slots nicely into a Bewdley-based holiday, especially if you're staying nearby at Bank Farm. It's the kind of spot you visit when you want woodland without the theme-park feel.
