The focus is local Highland history, from medieval times through to the present day, with exhibits that actually feel curated by people who know the area rather than a generic heritage formula.

Inside, there's proper detail. Archaeological finds, old photographs, manuscripts - the kind of material that makes sense of the landscape you've just been driving through. It's not overwhelming, which means you'll actually absorb something rather than wander around glazed over after twenty minutes. History enthusiasts will dig it; families with kids under ten might find it a bit text-heavy for sustained interest, though the hands-on bits help.

Admission is modest, and you can comfortably spend 45 minutes to an hour here without feeling rushed. It works brilliantly as a rainy-day break if you're based at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park - just a five-minute stroll away - or if you're exploring the quieter corners of Sutherland.
