Hoe Common

You won't find crowds at Hoe Common, and that's rather the point. This Norfolk common sits just outside Bylaugh, a proper stretch of open heathland that feels genuinely removed from the everyday - the kind of place where you might spot the occasional walker but little else.

It's grassland and scrub typical of East Anglia, unremarkable on the face of it, but locals come here for the space and the quiet. The common offers decent walking opportunities across gently rolling terrain, nothing strenuous, and it's the sort of place that rewards getting off the main footpaths if you've got a decent map or know what you're doing. Kids who are already keen walkers will manage fine here; younger ones might find it a bit bare and samey after twenty minutes or so.

The real draw is if you're based at nearby Bylaugh Country Park Caravan and Campsite - just under three miles away - and you want a walk that isn't a scheduled tourist attraction. No admission fees, no facilities to speak of, which means you need to come prepared. Early morning or late afternoon light here can be quite special if you catch it right.

Worth factoring into a wider Norfolk walking trip, particularly if you're exploring the quieter bits of the county. Don't expect drama, but do expect genuine solitude, which is increasingly rare.
