Hoffmann Kiln

The Hoffmann Kiln sits just outside Llanymynech in Powys, a brick-making installation that's genuinely intriguing if you've got an interest in industrial heritage. It's essentially a massive circular kiln - one of only a handful of Hoffmann kilns still standing in Britain - and it's the kind of thing that makes you realise how much effort went into the stuff we take for granted.

You get a proper sense of the scale when you walk round it. The engineering is remarkable for its time, designed to fire bricks continuously rather than in batches. The museum itself walks you through how the whole operation worked, and if you're into Victorian industrial processes or just enjoy understanding how things were made, it's genuinely absorbing. Not the sort of place to spend three hours, but an hour or so feels right.

History buffs and industrial archaeologists will get the most from a visit here. It's less suited to young kids unless they're already interested in how things work - there's not much hands-on stuff to keep them entertained. Families staying at Tanat Holiday Park or Sweeney Farm Glamping nearby could slot it in as a half-day activity without regret.

The real draw is that it's rare. You can't see these kilns everywhere, and this one's been preserved well enough that you actually understand what you're looking at. Worth the detour if you're exploring the Powys area, though do check opening hours before you head over - facilities can be a bit seasonal out here.
