Hog's Wood

The woodland around Stevenage isn't what you'd call dramatic, but Hog's Wood does the job on a decent afternoon. It's a modest patch of mixed broadleaf forest - the sort of place where locals actually walk their dogs rather than somewhere you've seen on postcards. The canopy is thick enough to feel properly sheltered, even on drizzly days, and the paths are reasonably well-maintained without being over-engineered.

What you're doing here is just walking. There aren't attractions within the wood itself - no visitor centre, no play equipment, no cafe. It's genuinely straightforward woodland exploration. You'll spot the usual suspects: bluebells in spring, the odd deer if you're lucky enough, and enough twisted roots and fallen logs to make kids feel like they're on an adventure. Figure on an hour to ninety minutes maximum unless you really take your time.

It works best for families after being cooped up or walkers wanting a proper leg-stretch without driving hours north. If you're based at Church Farm Ardeley just down the road - it's barely four miles away - this is the sort of place you'd pop to between pitches or if the weather's turning and you need cover. Not somewhere to plan your entire holiday around, but absolutely worth the short drive if you're staying nearby and need some greenery. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth bringing.
