Holdings Lawn

A sprawling patch of open woodland between Southampton and the New Forest, Holdings Lawn is one of those forests that rewards wanderers more than casual visitors. It's not the kind of place you'd trek to on its own - but if you're camped at nearby Matley Wood or staying in the area, it's worth an afternoon nose about.

The woodland itself is fairly typical New Forest fare: mature trees, some open glades, a proper network of footpaths crisscrossing through. You won't find anything dramatic - no waterfalls or viewpoint summits - but the walking is straightforward and the shade a genuine mercy on hot days. Families with younger kids will find an hour or two perfectly manageable; older children who actually like a walk will appreciate the space to range further.

Timing matters. Dawn or dusk, the place has atmosphere. Mid-afternoon on a summer weekend? You'll encounter fewer people than you'd expect, which rather sums up Holdings Lawn - it exists in the shadow of sexier forest attractions. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and snacks.

It sits well within a broader New Forest itinerary. Lepe Beach Campsite is close enough for a morning explore before heading to more celebrated spots, though Matley Wood's superior rating suggests it's the better base. The forest isn't a destination in itself, but as part of a lazy forest-hopping weekend, it does the job. Honest, unremarkable, and that's rather the point.
