Holme Wood

The woodland around Marlow pulls you in quietly - no grand entrance or visitor centre, just trees and decent walking paths that wind through what feels like proper countryside despite being within spitting distance of the Thames. Holme Wood itself is relatively compact, which means you won't spend all day here, but that's rather the point. It's the sort of place where an hour or ninety minutes feels just right, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Shillingridge Glamping or Chiltern Retreat Rural Camping.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are manageable year-round, and it's far enough from Marlow town centre to feel removed without requiring serious navigation skills. In autumn the place actually looks like something worth the detour - golden light through the canopy, proper seasonal feel. Come spring or summer and it's pleasant enough, though you won't be alone if the weather's decent.

There's nothing here to slow down families with small children for long - no facilities that I'm aware of, no playground infrastructure. Older kids who actually enjoy walking rather than just tolerating it will have a nicer time of it. The woodland itself is unremarkable in terms of what you see, but it connects well with wider routes around the Thames Valley if you're the sort who likes chaining walks together.

Free to access, as far as I can tell. No fees, no restrictions. It works best as part of a broader Chilterns walking plan rather than a destination in itself - pair it with Hurley Riverside Park or Embers Camping nearby and you've got decent bones for a quiet Thames Valley break.
