The woods near Doncaster aren't going to blow your mind, but Holmes Carr Great Wood is a solid spot if you're after a proper walk without travelling far from the caravan parks dotted around Bawtry. It's the sort of place where you can actually let the kids burn off some energy without worrying they'll end up at a major road - the paths wind through decent-sized woodland, and on a quiet weekday you could genuinely believe you're miles from anywhere rather than just outside South Yorkshire.

Walkers will get the most out of it. The terrain is manageable - nothing punishing - which makes it ideal if you're staying at Sunnyview or Bawtry caravan park and want to stretch your legs without a full day's commitment. Trees, some decent undergrowth, and enough space to get lost in for an hour or two without actually getting lost. It's free to wander, which is always a bonus.

Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter. Summer can feel a bit green and dense, but autumn is when it's properly worth the trip - the light comes through the trees properly then. Allow two hours if you're moving at a leisurely pace with kids, less if you're just after a quick circuit.
