Holt Island Nature Reserve

The River Great Ouse winds through this corner of Cambridgeshire like it's got nowhere particular to be, and Holt Island Nature Reserve sits right in the middle of that slow meander east of Huntingdon. It's a proper wetland - the kind of place where you'll spot water voles if you're lucky, herons if you're patient, and at least a dozen species of dragonfly on a decent summer's day.

This isn't a manicured visitor attraction with a cafe and gift shop. It's a working nature reserve where the habitat matters more than the footfall. You can walk the perimeter and peer into reed beds, watch for kingfishers along the water's edge, and generally feel like you've stumbled onto something real rather than something designed for tourists. The best time is early morning when the birds are active and most people are still asleep.

Birdwatchers will absolutely love it here. Families with young kids might manage an hour before restlessness sets in - there's not much in the way of playgrounds or interactive stuff, just nature doing its thing. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Crystal Lakes Leisure, Quiet Waters, or Waterclose Meadows are all within walking distance - it's a brilliant excuse for a morning out without driving anywhere.

Access and facilities aren't entirely clear-cut, so best ring ahead or check with Huntingdon's visitor information before you go. But if you're after a genuine slice of East Anglian wetland rather than another polished heritage site, this delivers.
