Holton Heath Cordite Factory

The Holton Heath Cordite Factory, just outside Poole, is one of those industrial heritage sites that stops you dead in your tracks. This was where they made cordite - the smokeless powder that changed warfare forever - and the site itself tells the story of a vast munitions operation that employed thousands during both world wars.

Walking around the remains of the factory buildings, you get a genuine sense of scale. The brick structures, the loading platforms, the narrow-gauge railway tracks still visible in places - it all combines to paint a picture of industrial intensity. It's not polished or prettified; this is raw history, and that's rather the appeal.

History buffs will absolutely get their money's worth here. If you've got teenagers studying WWI or WWII, it's genuinely educational without feeling like a classroom. Younger children might find it a bit abstract unless you really animate the stories for them - it's not a hands-on museum with interactive displays.

The site sits close to several caravan parks, making it a decent half-day add-on if you're based at Parkdean Resorts Sandford or South Lytchett Manor. Allow two to three hours to do it properly, especially if you take a guided tour (worth checking what's on offer when you visit). The walk is straightforward enough, though it can be muddy after rain.

It's not a destination in itself - you won't travel three hours to see it - but for anyone holidaying in the Poole area with even a passing interest in industrial or military heritage, it's absolutely worth the short detour.
