Holy Trinity

The chancel of Holy Trinity sits half-submerged when the tide comes in - which is precisely why people come to Bosham. This Saxon church, just outside Chichester, is famous for that flooded nave, a reminder that the village sits on a tidal creek rather than solid ground.

The building itself dates back to around 1000 AD, and the Normans added bits to it later. Inside, there's a proper sense of age: stone walls, a narrowish nave, medieval windows. The nave floods roughly twice a day when the tide's high, so the timing matters. Check local tide tables before you visit, because seeing it half-underwater is genuinely the whole point. At low tide it's just a village church - pleasant enough, but nothing extraordinary.

It's worth allowing an hour here. Walk down from the car park, poke around the churchyard (which overlooks the water), and if the tide's in, stand on the bank and watch the water lap at the walls. Photography types will have a field day. Families with young kids might get restless if they can't see the flood itself, but teenagers usually find the whole setup slightly mad in a good way.

Admission appears to be free, though donations likely help with upkeep. The nearest proper town is Chichester, which has all the facilities you'd expect. If you're camping at Stubcroft Farm or one of the other sites nearby, Bosham makes a solid morning or afternoon outing - combine it with a walk along the creek for a proper Sussex coast afternoon.
