Hook Copse

A proper woodland walk tucked away near Newbury, Hook Copse is what you get when you want trees without the crowds. The forest floor here is thick with ancient oaks and beech, the kind that actually make you feel like you've stepped back a few centuries. It's small enough that you won't spend all day wandering - more like a solid hour's ramble if you take your time - but that's exactly why it works so well as a break from the caravan.

The real appeal is the peace. No car parks, no facilities, just woodland as it should be. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it gets a bit muddy after rain and you'll want proper boots. History types might enjoy spotting the old coppice marks on some of the larger trees - someone's been managing this wood for centuries. Dog walkers absolutely love it, which tells you everything.

Don't expect play equipment or facilities - bring a flask if you're stopping long. It's free access as far as anyone can tell, which is rare enough these days. Go early on a weekday if you value actual solitude.
