Hook Norton Brewery

The brewery sits just outside Chipping Norton, a proper working operation that's been brewing the same way since 1849. You get to walk through the actual production floor and see the kit that's been there for generations - copper vessels the size of garden sheds, wooden casks stacked high, the whole place smelling of grain and fermentation. It's the kind of place where nothing's been modernised just for the sake of it.

The tour takes you through the lot: malting, brewing, conditioning. Staff know their stuff and don't patronise you. Afterwards there's a tasting room where you can try their ales - the Hooky is their flagship, a proper English bitter that goes down well. They also sell bottled stock to take away.

Who'd enjoy it most? Real ale drinkers, absolutely. Industrial heritage types will get a kick out of seeing Victorian brewing methods still in daily use. Kids might find it a bit dry unless they're already interested in how things work - there's not much hands-on stuff. Allow two hours including the tour and a drink.

Check their website before you go for tour times and whether you need to book - they do get busy on weekends. It's a quick drive from Chipping Norton town centre. If you're staying at Cotswold Hills Country Park or Chipping Norton Camping Club Site nearby, it's well worth the short trip. Pair it with an afternoon wandering Chipping Norton itself - decent market town with proper shops rather than chains.
