Horse Wood

Walk into Horse Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest. Towering oaks and beeches create a cathedral-like canopy, sunlight filtering through in dusty shafts that make you feel a bit smaller than you actually are. It's the kind of place where you can lose an hour without noticing.

The woodland trails wind through dense undergrowth, past moss-covered fallen logs and the occasional clearing where light floods through. In spring it's carpeted with bluebells. In autumn the leaf fall is so thick you're practically wading through it. There's something genuinely restorative about it - no gift shop, no car park theatre, just trees and birdsong.

This suits serious walkers and anyone who wants a proper forest experience rather than a manicured country estate. Families with older kids will enjoy it; younger ones might find the uneven paths a bit much. Allow a solid hour minimum, two if you're the type to stop and notice things.

Horse Wood sits about three miles south of East Grinstead, making it well-placed if you're basing yourself at Wild Boar Wood Campsite or Sunset Tree Camping nearby. Both are excellent spots and just a short drive away. It's the sort of place you'd combine with a bigger forest walk rather than make a day of it alone, though on a quiet weekday morning it feels properly remote. Free to wander, no facilities on site - bring decent boots and maybe a map.
