Horsell Common

Open heathland just outside Chertsey - that's what Horsell Common is, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The heath itself is genuinely pleasant: gorse, birch, and patches of sandy ground that feel properly wild for something so close to Surrey's commuter belt. Walking trails crisscross the whole thing, and on a clear day you get decent views across the common without fighting crowds.

It's the kind of spot walkers actually enjoy. No visitor centre, no tea room, no faffing about - just open access and fresh air. Families with young kids might spend an hour here; proper hikers will happily do a longer loop and combine it with nearby routes. Birdwatchers often turn up because the heathland attracts species you won't see in manicured gardens.

The main thing to know is there's no formal infrastructure, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. Car parking exists but it's not signposted like a tourist attraction. Free to wander, naturally. Spring is cracking for wildflowers; autumn for the colour and space to think.

If you're staying at Warren Farm Home Park or Chertsey Caravan Park - both within a few miles - Horsell Common makes an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not the sort of place that demands a special trip from London, but if you're already in the area exploring the Thames-side parks around Chertsey, it's well worth the detour. Proper Surrey heathland without the effort of getting to somewhere more famous.
