The town centre has that relaxed commuter vibe you get in places close enough to London for an easy train journey but far enough out to feel separate. Locals know the best river walks lead from the town towards The Totem Pole, a striking landmark that's become something of an Instagram favourite.

Memorial Cross stands as a poignant reminder of the area's wartime history, while The Valley Gardens provide a lovely spot for afternoon strolls. Families often head to Holme Farm for a proper day out - it's got that working farm atmosphere kids love.

Walking enthusiasts should definitely tackle the footpaths around Chickabiddy Hill and Ship Hill. The views from these modest peaks are cracking on clear days, stretching across to Windsor Great Park. Scarlet Oak Plantation and Egham Wick Plantations offer shaded woodland walks when the weather's being difficult.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Chertsey station connects directly to London Waterloo in about 50 minutes. The M25 junction is practically on the doorstep too, making it dead convenient for weekend breaks.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to explore Windsor, Virginia Water, and even central London as day trips, but you'll return to proper countryside each evening. The Camping and Caravanning Club sites around Chertsey and Walton on Thames are particularly well-positioned for exploring both the Thames Path and Surrey's gentler hills.
