Horsepasture Wood

The woods around Haywards Heath are dense and proper green, and Horsepasture Wood is one of the better stretches if you want an actual walk rather than just a ramble round the block. It's a working forest - you'll see the timber operations and managed sections - which some find adds character and others find a bit industrial. Either way, the paths are well-maintained and there's genuine woodland atmosphere once you're in.

This is miles better suited to adults and older kids who actually enjoy being in the trees rather than families after a quick splash about. Walkers get the most from it. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. Allow an hour to 90 minutes depending on which route you take - the wood isn't huge but it rewards a slow pace.

The real value is proximity to Haywards Heath itself, which means you're well-positioned for a few days mixing woodland walks with exploring the town. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Worth Forest Glamping is closest at under three miles, or Hook Farm if you want traditional camping - you could easily fit this in alongside other local walks without it feeling like the main event.

Free to access and no set hours to worry about, so it's genuinely flexible. Go early if you want solitude, though you'll probably see dog walkers and a few locals anyway. Bring a map or check the path markers before you head in - it's not complicated but some junctions aren't obvious.
