Quarry Wood

The sandstone cliffs at Quarry Wood tell the story of Surrey's industrial past - this former working quarry has transformed into a proper woodland walk with real character. You're walking through tunnels of beech and oak, past the old extraction sites where the ground suddenly drops away, exposing raw ochre-coloured stone faces that catch the light in surprising ways.

It's a decent spot for families who don't mind a bit of uneven ground. Kids get a kick out of exploring the quarry edges and scrambling around on the paths, though you'll want to keep a close eye on them near the steeper drops. The woodland itself is quiet - genuinely quiet - which makes it feel further from Haywards Heath than it actually is. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a proper poke around, longer if you're the type to sit on a fallen log and just listen.

Walkers love it because the terrain is varied without being brutal. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though winter can make things boggy in patches. Go in spring when the bluebells are out, or autumn when the light filters through the changing leaves - summer can feel a bit enclosed and muggy under the dense canopy.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Worth Forest Glamping or Hook Farm are closest at under three miles - this makes an excellent morning or early afternoon detour. It's the sort of place that works better as part of a wider Surrey day out rather than a destination in itself, but as a woodland escape with genuine historical bones, it absolutely delivers.
