Horseshoe Lake

The lake sits in a proper crescent - that's where it gets its name - and on a bright day the water reflects the sky so cleanly you can barely tell where one ends and the other begins. It's a gentle spot, this one, not dramatic or showy, but honest.

The walk around Horseshoe Lake takes the best part of an hour if you're meandering, and most people are. There's water on three sides, woodland backing it, and enough space that even when it's busy you don't feel crowded. Families come here for the uncomplicated nature of it - ducks, the odd heron if you're lucky, kids throwing stones into the water. Walkers appreciate the circuit, though it's not demanding terrain. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; bring nothing at all if you just want to sit on a bench and think.

Wokingham's the nearest town, about five miles south, which gives you context for where this sits in Hampshire. If you're staying at Wellington Country Park nearby, Horseshoe Lake works brilliantly as an afternoon venture - it's close enough not to feel like a separate excursion, but far enough that it feels like you've actually gone somewhere.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretive panels. That's rather the point. It's free to visit and there's nowhere obvious to buy a ticket because there isn't one. Go early if you want solitude, go midweek if you want fewer people. Either way, don't expect fireworks - expect water, trees, and the kind of quiet that actually means something.
