Horsey Island Wildlife Reserve

The tidal marshes around Horsey Island pull you into proper birdwatcher territory. This isn't some manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and gift shops - it's a working wetland where you're genuinely lucky to spot the birds rather than the other way around. The island itself floods and empties with the tide, so timing matters. You'll want binoculars and a field guide, and patience in abundance.

Whoosh, and a curlew's off. That's the real draw here. Waders, wildfowl, the occasional rare migrant if you're the obsessive type who checks eBird at dawn. The landscape is wide and bleak in the best possible way - low horizons, mudflats, reedy channels. It's not the walk for everyone. Kids get restless, photographers lose light fast, and if you're after a quick twenty-minute loop, you're in the wrong place.

The nearby holiday parks - Woolacombe Sands, Ruda, Braddicks - put you within easy reach if you fancy morning and dusk visits, which is when the light and the birds cooperate best. Combine it with the beaches at Croyde Bay, four miles south, and you've got a proper coastal day mapped out.

Free access, no infrastructure to speak of. Just ground, water, and what chooses to show up. For dedicated birders or serious landscape photographers staying in the area, it's absolutely worth the trip. For casual visitors after an easy stroll? You might find it a bit bleak.
