Hotham Meadow SSSI

The Humber estuary floods here twice a day, and Hotham Meadow responds like clockwork. This Site of Special Scientific Interest near Brough is essentially a working wetland - brackish marshland that shifts between water and exposed mud depending on the tide. You won't find facilities or marked trails; it's a proper naturalist's spot, the kind of place where binoculars matter more than a café.

Wintertime is when it earns its designation. Thousands of wildfowl descend - wigeon, teal, pintail - along with the occasional rarity that gets twitchers driving from across Yorkshire. Spring and autumn bring migrating warblers and passage birds. Even in summer, when the crowds are elsewhere, you'll spot herons standing motionless in the shallows and voles working the margins.

It's free to visit and demands no entry fee or booking. Bring decent binoculars and expect to spend an hour or two, depending on tide times and what you're hoping to see. Families with young children might find it a bit dull - there's no playground, no interpretation boards, and you're essentially standing in a field looking at water. Serious birdwatchers and nature photographers, though, will find it quietly brilliant.
