Hull Citadel Reconstruction

The Hull Citadel isn't a destination that'll stop you in your tracks on arrival - it's more of a proper historical curio that rewards a bit of curiosity. What you're looking at is a reconstruction of a 17th-century star fort that once dominated this stretch of East Yorkshire, built to defend the port when Hull mattered more strategically than it does now.

The earthworks are still visible if you know where to look, though the actual defensive structures have largely vanished into legend. It's the kind of place where you stand around trying to imagine lines of cannon fire across what's now fairly ordinary terrain. History types will get more from it than casual visitors - you need to bring your own historical baggage to make sense of the site.

Based near Beverley, it's easily tackled as part of a broader exploration of East Yorkshire's heritage. If you're camping at Spring Valley Campsite a few miles away, it's worth a morning potter about rather than a special trip. Allow an hour at most, longer if you're genuinely into 17th-century fortifications.

The free admission (or at least, no obvious charge) makes it a low-stakes addition to your park holiday itinerary. Best visited in decent weather when the earthworks cast shadows that actually help you read the geography. Winter makes it harder to distinguish what's intentional archaeology and what's just lumpy ground.
