Hull General Cemetery

Walking through Hull General Cemetery feels less like visiting a graveyard and more like stumbling into a proper woodland sanctuary in the middle of East Yorkshire. The place is thick with mature trees, winding paths, and that particular kind of peaceful quiet you only get when nature's had a few centuries to do its thing undisturbed.

It's genuinely beautiful in a solemn way. Victorian monuments rise between oaks and elms, the stones weathered soft by rain and time. You'll find yourself walking for longer than you planned, partly because the paths meander in unexpected directions, and partly because there's something genuinely engaging about reading the inscriptions and imagining the lives they represent.

Historically minded visitors and local history buffs will find plenty to occupy them here. It's the kind of place where you notice architecture - the chapel, the gatehouses, the way different eras of burial design sit alongside each other. Families with older children do well here too, though younger kids might find it a bit solemn unless they're keen on exploring woods and spotting wildlife.

The cemetery is free to wander, and there's no time limit - you could do a peaceful hour's walk or spend half a day picking through the paths. It works nicely as a quieter break from busier attractions when you're staying at Butt Farm Caravan, Campsite & Glamping nearby, just outside Beverley. Not somewhere you'd travel miles out of your way for, but if you're in East Yorkshire already, it's absolutely worth the detour.
