Hulverstone Plantation

Scattered across the western coast between Newport and the Needles, this woodland feels properly wild compared to some of the island's more manicured spots. The plantation spreads over rolling terrain that gives you glimpses of the Solent through the canopy - assuming you can find the right path through what can be a bit of a maze.

Walkers who enjoy a proper ramble will get the most from Hulverstone. The network of unmarked tracks means you'll likely take a different route each time, though that also means families with young ones might find it frustrating when everyone starts asking "are we nearly there yet?" The woodland is thick enough to provide decent shelter on blustery days, which is handy given how exposed this part of the island can be.

Dog owners seem to love the place - plenty of space to let them off the lead without worrying about traffic or livestock. Just watch out for the occasional mountain biker bombing through the trees.

If you're staying at Tapnell Farm or Tom's Eco Lodge, it's close enough for an afternoon wander. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend longer if you're not in a rush. The lack of clear waymarking adds to the adventure, but bring a decent map if you're planning anything ambitious.
