Shalcombe Down

Rolling chalk grassland meets ancient woodland on this elevated stretch of downland west of Newport. The views across the Solent are properly spectacular on a clear day, stretching to the mainland and beyond. Walking the ridge here gives you that proper sense of being on an island - you can see how small and self-contained the Isle of Wight really is.

Families with older children who don't mind a decent walk will get the most from Shalcombe Down. The terrain can be uneven and there are some steep sections, so it's not ideal for pushchairs or very young legs. Dog walkers love it up here - plenty of space to let them off the lead safely.

Expect to spend a good two hours exploring properly, though you could easily make a half-day of it with a picnic. The spring bluebells are lovely if you time it right, and autumn brings that golden light that photographers rave about. Wind can be fierce year-round - pack layers.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes this an easy day out. Compton Farm is less than a mile away, while Tapnell Farm and Tom's Eco Lodge are both within walking distance for the keener types. The down connects well with other Isle of Wight walking routes if you're planning a proper hiking holiday.
