Humberhead Peatlands NNR

The flattest, most otherworldly corner of South Yorkshire, Humberhead Peatlands NNR sprawls across thousands of acres of bog and wetland where the landscape looks like nowhere else in England. What you're really doing here is walking through a working peatland - spongy underfoot, dotted with heather and cross-leaved heath, punctuated by pools that reflect an enormous sky. The paths are decent and mostly level, which makes it accessible without being dull.

This place rewards patient naturalists and photographers more than casual strollers. Expect dragonflies, wading birds, the occasional adder sunbathing on the boardwalks, and the sort of silence that makes you realise how rare that is. In winter and early spring the water levels rise dramatically, creating genuine wildness. Summer can feel a bit dry and less atmospheric, truth be told.

The reserve sits just north of Doncaster, making it a solid half-day option if you're staying at Mooreacres or Bawtry caravan park nearby. Don't expect facilities - bring a packed lunch and decent boots, as the ground gets boggy after rain. Allow two to three hours minimum to do it justice. Kids will either find it brilliant or tedious depending on whether they're into spotting birds and insects. There's genuine beauty in the emptiness, but it's not the sort of place you'd drag a reluctant teenager to twice.
