Thorne Moor Viewing Tower

The tower stands alone on Thorne Moor, a flat expanse of wetland south of Doncaster that doesn't immediately shout 'visit me'. But climb those stairs and you get something genuinely different - a proper bird's eye view of one of England's rarest habitats. The moor itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to sphagnum mosses, sundews, and birds most of us will never see from ground level.

It's not a place for the impatient. The landscape is low-key, almost austere, and the viewing platform gives you the height to actually understand what you're looking at - the patchwork of bog pools, the far-off treeline, the sheer flatness that makes you feel stranded in the best possible way. Birdwatchers and nature photography types will have a proper day here. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before they're bored.

Access is straightforward from Doncaster, though there's not much infrastructure on site - bring your own refreshments. The tower itself is free, which is just as well given there's nothing else to pay for. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, half that if you're just passing through.

Team it with a stay at Mooreacres or Between Rivers Camping nearby, both solid options for a Yorkshire break. The moor makes sense as part of a broader wetland and wildlife trip rather than a standalone destination, but if you're already in the area, the climb is worth the effort.
