Humphrey Head

The walk up Humphrey Head takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Grange-over-Sands, and it's one of those Lancashire coastal surprises that catches you off guard. You're climbing a proper limestone headland with views across Morecambe Bay that stretch for miles - flat and vast and occasionally beautiful depending on the light. The reserve itself is small but botanically interesting. Spring brings rare wildflowers, and the rocky outcrops support plants you won't find elsewhere round here. It's a walker's spot rather than a destination where you'll linger for hours. The path is well-maintained but can be muddy after rain, and the summit isn't particularly dramatic - just a decent vantage point over the bay and back towards the Lake District fells.

Families with energetic kids will get their money's worth from the ascent alone. Older children who enjoy scrambling over rocks and spotting birds will find plenty to do. Casual walkers wanting a quick leg-stretch between Grange and the holiday parks will appreciate the short timeframe and minimal effort required. History types, though, might feel a bit underwhelmed - there's limited information about the site's background or former uses.

The reserve is free to access and there's parking nearby. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking photographs or bird-watching; forty-five if you're just doing the circuit. It sits perfectly as a morning or late-afternoon outing from Haven Lakeland Leisure Park or Willow Tree Holiday Park - both within striking distance - especially if you're planning to combine it with a visit to Grange-over-Sands itself. The bay views alone justify the trip if the weather cooperates.
