Humpty's Down

The woodland around Humpty's Down, just outside Alresford, is proper Hampshire - ancient trees, decent paths, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the forest in the first place. It's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around, though walkers heading through the area will find it worth the detour.

There's nothing flashy here. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards spelling everything out. Just woodland doing what woodland does - offering shelter, shade, and enough room to stretch your legs without fighting through crowds. The terrain's manageable for families who don't mind a gentle ramble, though very small children might find longer routes tedious. Serious hikers will use it as a waypoint on bigger loops around Alresford rather than a destination itself.

If you're camping at Woodlands Camping just up the road, it's genuinely handy for an hour or two of green space. Hampshire Hills, slightly further out, gives you a bit more woodland exploration to choose from. Neither park will feel claustrophobic because you've got actual forest close by.

Winter's actually the better time - you'll see more of the ground structure and the paths aren't churned to mud. Summer's fine if you want shade on a hot day, but expect the place to feel properly enclosed. There's no charge, no faffing about with booking, just turn up and go. That's rather the point.
