Walk into Huntbourne Wood and you're straight into proper woodland - tall trees, dappled light, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means muddy paths, fallen logs to clamber over, and genuine quiet. There's no visitor centre or admission fee nonsense; you just turn up and explore.

The wood works best for families who don't mind getting their boots dirty and walkers after a straightforward hour or two in the trees. It's near Ashford, making it convenient for a morning walk if you're based at Broadhembury Caravan & Camping Park just 2.4 miles away. The woodland's compact enough that you won't spend all day here - factor in 90 minutes maximum before everyone's ready for lunch - but it's the sort of place that feels remote despite being minutes from civilisation.

Go when it's been dry for a day or two if you can. After rain the paths become streaming ditches, which some people enjoy and others absolutely don't. Spring brings bluebells and bird activity; autumn is all golden light and leaf-crunching underfoot. There's nothing fancy about Huntbourne Wood, but that's rather the point. It's the real thing - a wood you walk through, not a tourist attraction you visit. Perfectly decent if you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots and need to burn off energy before heading back for tea.
