Hunters Hill

The walk up Hunters Hill from Crewe takes you away from the industrial sprawl surprisingly fast. It's not a dramatic peak - Cheshire doesn't do drama - but the views across the Midlands are genuinely worthwhile once you've climbed it. On a clear day you can see well beyond the local farmland, which makes the effort feel justified.

The ascent itself is straightforward, nothing that'll trouble most walkers. It's more suited to families after a decent stroll than serious fell-walkers after a challenge. Kids won't be bored provided you've got them in boots rather than trainers - the ground's muddy when it rains, and it rains often round here. Budget an hour and a half return trip if you're not rushing.

This works well as part of a broader walking circuit rather than a destination in itself. Cheshire has plenty of decent countryside pubs within reach, and it's close enough to Tipsy Tree Glamping or The Willows Touring Park that you can make it part of a morning before heading back for lunch. Sunny Side Touring Park's a bit further but still accessible if you're based there.

Admission's free and there are no formal opening hours - you simply walk it. Go midweek if you can. Weekends pull in the local crowd, and the small car parks fill early. It's the sort of place that rewards actually being here rather than reading about it, so don't expect signposted Instagram moments. Just decent countryside and a proper view.
