Temple of Peace Wood

A woodland walk near Crewe that actually delivers on peace and quiet, which is saying something in Cheshire. Temple of Peace Wood is straightforward - it's a proper forest you can wander through, the kind where you lose the sound of traffic within about fifty metres. The trees do the work here. No facilities, no tea shop, no interpretive signs telling you what you're looking at. Just paths, undergrowth, and the smell of damp earth.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic - don't expect stunning vistas or dramatic elevation changes - but it's the sort of place you go when you want forty minutes away from things rather than a full day out. Families with younger kids might find it a touch aimless after twenty minutes unless they're into spotting birds or collecting sticks, which fair enough, some are.

Free to access, naturally. Allow an hour if you're taking it slowly, half that if you just want a loop. Best visited when it's not been raining for a week - the paths get properly muddy otherwise.

If you're camping at Tipsy Tree Glamping just two miles away, or Oakwood Campsite at under five miles, it's an easy morning mission before heading into Crewe or exploring further afield. Worth the walk, though only if you value silence over scenery.
