Hunters Hill Quarry

The old quarry cuts into the landscape near Leyland like someone's taken a giant bite out of the hillside. Hunters Hill Quarry is one of those places that's more about the geology than the facilities - you're looking at exposed rock faces and the raw evidence of Lancashire's industrial past rather than a manicured visitor experience.

It's genuinely worth a look if you're into stone and landscape. The quarry walls reveal different layers of rock, and there's something compelling about seeing how the earth was carved away for building material. On a clear day the views across the surrounding countryside are proper decent too. You can walk around the rim and get down into parts of it depending on conditions, though it's not signposted or managed like a formal attraction.

Geologists and keen walkers will find this more interesting than families after a day out - kids will get bored after twenty minutes unless they're the sort who enjoy clambering about on rough ground. There's no café, no visitor centre, no charge. Just bring yourself and sturdy footwear because it can be muddy and uneven underfoot.

It works as a quick detour if you're staying at Royal Umpire Caravan Park and fancy breaking up a day. Give it an hour at most, unless you're really going to study the rock formations. The location near Leyland makes it accessible without being on the main tourist trail, which is partly its charm.
