About Hut Circles

Stone circles mark where Bronze Age families once lived on this stretch of Dartmoor, about four miles northeast of Tavistock. These low circular walls - some barely knee-high now - are the remains of roundhouses dating back 3,000 years.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to ponder as they wander between the dozen or so visible structures scattered across the moorland. Each circle represents a single dwelling, and you can still make out doorways and internal divisions in the better-preserved examples. The largest measures about 30 feet across.

Walkers get a proper workout reaching them - it's a fair trek from any road, and the terrain can be boggy after rain. Families with young children might find the distance challenging, though older kids who enjoy exploring will love clambering over the ancient stones.

Being Dartmoor, access is free and the site never closes, but come prepared for changeable weather. Allow a full morning or afternoon for the walk and exploration.

Staying at nearby parks like Woodland Springs Touring Park or Langstone Manor Holiday Park puts you well within reach of this corner of Dartmoor. It's worth combining with other Bronze Age sites in the area - there are dozens of stone rows and burial chambers within walking distance if you're feeling ambitious.
