Hyndburn Heritage Museum

The Hyndburn Heritage Museum sits in Accrington, just south of Clitheroe, and tells the story of what Lancashire's textile industry actually meant to real people. It's a proper local museum - the kind where you'll find yourself reading handwritten letters and looking at photographs of mill workers from the 1890s because the stories are genuinely absorbing.

You get industrial history without the stuffiness. There are looms, fabric samples, and details about the Accrington Pals, the regiment that was decimated at the Somme. It's the sort of place that makes you understand why this part of Lancashire mattered so much during the Industrial Revolution.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're reading everything. Kids under ten might find it a bit text-heavy, but teenagers interested in history or how things were made will get something real from it. The museum staff are knowledgeable and will chat properly if you ask questions - no condescension.

It works well as a wet-weather stop during a park holiday in the area. Rossendale Holiday Cottages is under six miles away, and Pendle View Holiday Park at six miles gives you a decent base for exploring Clitheroe and the wider Ribble Valley. Neither of those parks are far, so you could easily visit the museum as a morning activity before heading back for lunch or a walk elsewhere in the region.
